Cowans Sporting Tarpon Challenge, Florida Keys 2017

8th May 2017

Islamorada, Florida Keys 2017 and the "official" Cowans Sporting Tarpon Challenge day…

On board today is Craig Denman ( Host ), Steve McDonald from the West Country, a seasoned worldwide offshore angler. And Nicky Graves from London a specialist big game fisherman.

We were fishing with Capt. Jeff Beeler out of Bud n Marys Marina, Islamorada.

Jeff called the shot and made the decision to go 40 miles off shore to the back country and just off the Everglades coastline. The sea was mirror calm and we set off at great speed…it took just about 1 hour to reach our destination but it was well worth the trip.

We were into fish from the off. I got the ball rolling with a nice black tip shark and Nicky soon followed suit. Steve then had our first tarpon of the trip, not a biggy, around 50/60Ib, but nice to get off the mark and start the leader board.

Nicky got hooked into what can only be described as “Jaws”…we were dragged for a 20 minute ride out to see. During this time we saw the fin once ( it was very big )…the line snapped much to our relief, even our Captain Jeff was glad to see it go.

More sharks followed up to around 80Ib and then Steve had another Tarpon around the same size ... opening up a gap at the top !!! Still more sharks came, ranging from around 30 to100Ib, with a fair few snap offs along the way due to using mono leader, not wire, as we wanted the tarpon.

15 minutes to go and i hooked and landed a Tarpon off around 125 / 130Ib !! So, on the day, Steve was smashed size wise, I pulled in the biggest but the challenge was a numbers game making Steve the Winner !

Jeff Beeler was a great skipper and big thanks go to him for his help and expertise on the day.
